Safety tips when visiting New York

But there is one thing that sometimes puts people off going to New York, and that’s safety. There are a lot of horror stories about it being a dangerous place. However, many of them are overblown. It’s a big city, so there are going to be dangers. Yes, there are people that are looking to prey on tourists. But it’s no more dangerous than somewhere like London. So, as long as you follow safety tips when visiting New York, you shouldn’t have any problems.

The Airport

People worry about the airport when they travel to the US because security is tight. That’s especially true at a busy airport like JFK. It’s not necessarily a safety concern, but there are a lot of people that worry about being detained because they made a simple mistake at security. That’s why it’s important that you are prepared beforehand. You need to apply for an ESTA before you will be allowed in the country. (You can get one at https://www.usaesta.com) Plus, your passport usually needs at least 6 months left on it. They will most likely ask you some questions about why you are coming into the country and where you are staying etc. It can be a little intimidating but it’s important that you don’t panic because that’s when you will have problems. Just stay calm and make sure you have the right paperwork and you will be fine.

If you are using a taxi, you should never get into an unmarked one because they will overcharge you and, in rare cases, rob you. It’s fairly easy to find the right taxis because you’re looking for the yellow cab with a light on the roof to display the driver’s medallion number. It’s one of the most iconic images associated with New York, so it’s easy to spot. Check out https://www.tripsavvy.com/ for more information. You can also use Uber and Lyft, but they’re not regulated so expect to pay a bit more.

The Subway

The subway is the easiest way to get around when you’re in New York, and you should take advantage of it, but you do need to be careful. Make sure that you only buy Metrocards from approved vendors in the station. Also, beware of scammers that claim to be helping you out with your ticket. It’s a simple system and you should be able to work it out for yourself, so don’t let anybody else take over and start pressing buttons on the machine.

New York has its dangerous areas like any city. But if you follow these safety tips when visiting New York, you’ll be perfectly safe on your trip.
