Fish and Fruit at Rialto Market Venice
From 7 am the square near to Rialto bridge in the San Polo area becomes a bustling market selling wonderful fresh fish and local fruit and veg.
This is where the restaurants in the area source their wonderful seafood and fresh fruit that is sold in cups around the city.
Dating back to the eleventh century this historic market has been a trading centre and home to merchants buying from the unloaded ships in the area.
The seafood is sold under a covered area where you can still see fish carved into the pillars. You will find crab, squid, octopus, clams and mussels for sale. Huge tuna and salmon steaks and whole fish.
It’s fun to stroll through the markets and watch as business unfolds. Taking in the sights and smells (some good some not so good). Bright and colourful fruits and veg makes it a great place for photography too!
The market is open until 2 pm and is closed on Mondays.
Take a look at how I saw it…..
